The Sexual Side Effects of Chemotherapy

How Treatment May Affect Your Sex Life and What You Can Do About It

Chemotherapy produces many side effects - including sexual side effects. Many people may think that sex is not important during treatment, however many psychologists believe that it may be. Intimacy can often bring higher levels of self esteem and make one feel closer to their partner during rough times of treatment. It is very easy to feel unattractive if you have lost your hair during chemotherapy, and intimacy can help a person feel more attractive.

Common Sexual Side Effects of Chemotherapy

Impotence
Impotence is a condition in which a man is unable to have or keep an erection.

Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is a condition in which men develop breast tissue. It is usually attributed to hormonal imbalances.

Loss of Sexual Desire
Loss of libido is a very common chemotherapy side effect.

It can be caused by fatigue, self esteem issues, hormonal imbalances, nauseam and other disorders.

Vaginal Dryness
Again, this can result from hormonal imbalances.

Vaginal Infections
Vaginal infections are common in women during chemotherapy, especially if the women is taking antibiotics or steroids.

What You Can Do About Sexual Side Effects of Chemotherapy

The good news is that most sexual side effects of chemotherapy go way after treatment. If you are experiencing sexual side effects, talk to your doctor. Trust me, you will not be the first or last to experience sexual problems during treatment. Staying intimate during treatment is important and doctors realize this, so don't be shy about expressing your concerns.

Communication with your partner is essential! It may be difficult for some men to admit a side effect like erectile dysfunction, but letting your partner know can only help the relationship.
